ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I - $56,540 to $68,724 Annually
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II - $62,160 to $75,556 Annually
Under supervision, maintain or prepare engineering and Public Works technical data, review plans for compliance with City standards, codes and constructability, interpret and administer public right-of-way issues related to the department, answer questions, and provide information to the public relative to technical engineering issues. Perform planning, engineering, and technical assignments related to design, construction, maintenance, and operation on a variety of Public Works permitting tasks and Land Development projects. Assist in the preparation and processing of planning and permitting documents. Establish effective working relationships with contractors, vendors and government agencies; coordinate activities with other City departments. Assist and support staff to respond to public complaints. Participate in field surveys and inspection as needed. Review engineering cost estimates and estimate permit fees. Demonstrate initiative to organize, evaluate and document division procedures. Respond to questions from the public and City staff, both orally and in writing; perform varied office work including preparing agreements, permits, printing plans and documents, filing and archiving; prepare written correspondence; maintain technical records and maps; and other perform other assigned duties. Customer service is a key component of the position.
Engineering Technician II - This is the full journey-level class within the Engineering Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Engineering Tech I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including handling all aspects of assigned permit types. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Note: Offers of employment may be made at the Engineering Technician I or II level depending on experience. The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department, Engineering Division. Candidates from the established list may be considered for other future openings within the Engineering Division.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Engineering principles and practices; planning and permitting methods and protocols; terminology, methods, practices, and techniques of drafting and computer aided design; mathematics as applied to engineering (algebra, geometry and trigonometry); contemporary technology applications including AutoCAD, GIS, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat and permitting software.
ABILITY TO: Understand and interpret engineering plans, specifications, policies, laws, codes and regulations; coordinate and review engineering design and drafting work; make accurate computations; estimate quantities for projects; maintain organized and accurate records; research and analyze engineering construction and maintenance issues and information; study problems and recommend effective solutions; prepare professional reports and documents; follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely; work cooperatively to achieve project goals; and learn to manage a variety of databases. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other engineering equipment. May perform AutoCAD.
SKILL IN: Use of various engineering tools including AutoCAD for drafting and design, developing spreadsheets and databases, written and oral communication; computer applications such as AutoCAD, GIS, Excel, Word, Access, and the Internet.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Associate Degree or equivalent with related major course work in engineering, mathematics, sciences, or related field. Two years of technical engineering experience is preferred.
